In 2022, Jai Dog Rescue launched its Unsung Heroes campaign, created to provide long-term support for those who dedicate their lives to Thailand’s street dogs.

There are millions of stray dogs in rural Thailand, many rely solely on the incredible generosity of local feeders and rescuers who work tirelessly to help the helpless. 

We think these unsung heroes deserve recognition and support for their selfless actions.

As a nun of the Wat Tavor Nimit temple in Nakhon Nayok, P Sumneung has dedicated her life to the care of others. For the last 8 years she has run a makeshift dog shelter for some 200 dogs, transforming her own house into a safe space for vulnerable animals who would otherwise have perished on the streets. 

She has no assistance and is not paid for her work. She places her dogs’ comfort and wellbeing over her own without question or complaint. 

In 2022, we rebuilt P Sumneung’s shelter, rebuilding the shelter and living quarters which were in urgent need of repair. The deteriorated structures were treacherous, and the dogs’ kennelling no longer met their needs. We also believed that P Sumneung deserved a new, comfortable living space to call her own and her dogs now have a safe space to call home.

But the #UnsungHeroes campaign doesn’t end there: we have continued to provide P Sumneung with long-term support and access to medication and emergency veterinary care.

Neang is an inspiring individual who independently operates her own feeding route along the border of the Khao Yai National Park in rural Thailand.

Neang is 67 years old and has dedicated the last 29 years of her life to feeding vulnerable and starving street dogs in Nakhon Nayok.

Twice a day, she loads up her side car with homemade dog food and rice ready for drop offs. Her route spans 40km and she makes up to 12 drops, feeding up to 120 dogs per day.

Neang and her husband are retired and she relies on their pension to feed themselves and the dogs. Neang has been the sole carer for her husband for over 5 years and, unfortunately, he cannot physically help her. Her bike is gradually deteriorating and the side car is only just hanging on.

The dogs depend on Neang and, despite her many challenges, Neang soldiers on. Her commitment to street dogs is admirable but she desperately needs our help.

We have committed to raising £5,000, which will replace Neang’s bike and side car and provide long term support for the dogs she looks after through regular food, our emergency aid for rescue cases and vital tick, flea and worm preventative treatment. We also want to help promote and encourage more community involvement and compassion towards animals to ease Neang’s daily struggle and ensure her daily efforts are praised.

We support local rescuers through both emergency appeals, such as rebuilding P Sumneung’s shelter & fundraising to replace Neang’s bike.

But we also want to provide lifelong support for the local community of rescuers and many other incredible unsung heroes like them.
